Shay #16

In November 2003, a group of men moved the shay which sat on top of a hill near Hoover Dam. The Shay was owned by Hacienda Hotel & Casino and sat on top of a hill across from the casino. The shay was purchased for use on WS.

It took 3 days and 4 trucks to move all the equipment. It is currently located in Washington state where it will be rebuilt. Included with the Shay, was a 0-4-0 Porter engine which sat in front of the Casino's parking lot. There were also 3 cars with trucks dating back to the late 1800s.

History of the Shay
The Shay was built in 1909. Its a Class B, 2 - truck Shay. It was built as a wood burner, than converted to oil. The exact weight is unknown, but empty it was 51,000 pounds. It worked for a number of railroads until the Hacienda Hotel & Casino bought it.

Condition
The condition of the shay was "OK". Of course there are a ton of parts missing on it and quite a bit of rust and dry-rot damage. However, Brad has been collecting Shay and locomotive parts his whole life and has enough to get it back together. He has already dismantled the engine and steam cleaned it. He is also having parts machined to replace the old.

Future Plans

The plans for the engine are to restore it to operating condition. It was bought under the West Side Narrow Gauge Restoration project, a Non-profit organization. We continue to talk with the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians on getting the railroad running again. You can help by signing a Letter of Support.
